“The tools show a level of planning and craftsmanship that challenges the notion that East Asian hominins were technologically conservative,” said Bo Li, lead author of a new study released in Science. With a field dominated for so long by stone tools, finding 35 wooden artifacts dating to 300,000 years ago at Gantangqing in southwest China’s Yunnan province is compelling a complete overhaul in understanding early human adaptation and cognition.

Secured by the oxygen-starved clay of an ancient lake shore, these tools varying from sturdy digging sticks to diminutive, pointed hand tools and hook-shaped cutters are the oldest wooden artifacts yet recorded in East Asia. Their survival is a precious archaeological find, considering the susceptibility of organic materials to the decaying process over millennia. Though comparable discoveries in Europe and Africa, the well-known Schöningen spears for example, have been linked with hunting, the Gantangqing tools had another purpose: intentional foraging of subterranean plant food such as tubers, rhizomes, and corms.
Careful analysis demonstrates deliberate shaping, polishing, and even use-wear evidence telling signs of advanced manufacture. The collection contains both large, two-handed tools as well as highly carved, handheld instruments, all of which are made most frequently from pine and choice hardwoods (Sci.News, 2025). Some of the tools contain residual plant and soil residues, providing immediate indicators of use.
What is most significant about this discovery is not only the preservation of organic technology, but the glimpse that it gives us into the mental lives of early hominins. The people who lived in Gantangqing did not simply respond to their world; they organized trips to the lakeshore, picked the right wood, and fashioned specialized tools for particular activities. As the authors of the study have put it, “They made planned visits to the lakeshore and brought with them fabricated tools of selected wood for exploiting underground tubers, rhizomes, or corms”.
This proof of intentionality and foresight is a building block of cognitive archaeology. It indicates that, rather than technologically repressed, early East Asian communities had sophisticated planning skills and ecological understanding. The subtropical climate at the site, teeming with edible flora, could have supported a plant-based survival strategy as opposed to the hunting-centered cultures of Europe during the same time.
The artifacts were dated using cutting-edge methods. Infrared luminescence, which quantifies the time since mineral grains have last seen sunlight, and electron spin resonance, which detects the buildup of trapped electrons in crystal flaws, yielded a solid range of 250,000 to 361,000 years. These techniques have become crucial to sites well beyond the reach of radiocarbon dating, and their use at Gantangqing reflects the wider accuracy of chronometric tools in paleoanthropology.
The wider significance echoes in arguments over early human activity. The so-called “bamboo hypothesis” the theory that wooden tools ruled prehistory in East Asia but were never preserved finds backing in this discovery. In Michelle Langley of Griffith University’s words, not a participant in the research, “These tools do support the idea that there could be a complex repertoire of organic technologies which are ‘archaeologically invisible'”.
The Gantangqing site offers also a rebuttal to the “man the hunter” model. In addition to animal remains, scientists uncovered vegetation remains like hazelnuts, pine nuts, grapes, and kiwis, a portrait of a varied, predominantly vegetarian diet that demanded knowledge and cleverness to tap.
Among the global prehistory of humankind, the Gantangqing wooden tools represent proof of innovation, flexibility, and the unapparent sophistication of early hominin technology. The discovery is a testament to the advancing powers of archaeological science and the lasting intelligence of our early ancestors.
