Apple’s Foldable iPad on Hold as Manufacturing Complexities and Market Realities Shape the Future of Flexible Displays

Is the vision of a creaseless, notebook-size foldable iPad further into the distance? Apple’s shelving of work on its large-screen foldable tablet highlights just how daunting the technical and financial hurdles still are, even for the world’s most ingenious device maker.

The temptation of a foldable iPad reportedly measuring between 18.8 and 20.2 inches with an uncreased OLED screen has both fascinated consumers and industry watchers. However, Apple has suspended development because of “manufacturing difficulties, increased production expenses for foldable display technology, and modest consumer demand for larger foldable devices,” according to Digitimes and confirmed by MacRumors. This shift is not so much about changing priorities; it is an indication of the complicated science and economics behind the next generation of mobile devices.

Flexible OLED screens, the cornerstone of contemporary foldables, represent a particularly challenging engineering problem. Contrary to the conventional glass panels, these screens are based on ultra-thin polyimide substrate materials and intricate multi-layer designs each layer thinner than a strand of human hair. Display Daily reports that the whole screen and touch module have to be less than 1.0 mm thick with support for as tight a bending radius of 1.5 mm. The result is a manufacturing yield rate that sits at less than 30 percent, a far cry from the 60-70 percent yields for typical OLED panels. This low yield, added to the premium paid for specialized materials and processes, more than doubles the cost of a foldable display module compared to the rigid counterpart.

Apple’s hopes of a crease-free fold introduce still more complexity. Apple would need a thicker, chemically treated front glass to minimize visible creasing, according to display analyst Ross Young a development that would raise production costs and engineering risk even higher. It is not just to create a foldable device, but to create it at the uncompromising standards of quality and aesthetics that Apple demands.

The market situation is no less grim. Samsung, Huawei, and Lenovo have already launched foldable laptops and tablets, but their penetration is minimal. TweakTown points out that tablet users retain their devices for longer periods than smartphone users, and the applications for large foldables are not yet established. At Apple’s tablet business, which brought in $6.4 billion during Q2 2025 but is experiencing flat growth, the maths of spending billions on a niche, premium product becomes problematic.

In the meantime, Apple’s product roadmap is changing. The tech giant is now focusing on its foldable iPhone, which has allegedly reached the P1 prototype stage and is expected to launch as soon as 2026, as reported by Gizmochina. The device, said to boast a 7.8-inch OLED screen, titanium alloy frame, and liquid metal hinge, is set to provide an “almost invisible crease” and a small foldable form factor similar to the Galaxy Z Flip. The emphasis on a foldable iPhone is both a more tractable engineering problem smaller screens are simpler to produce with higher yields and a more apparent avenue to mass market acceptance.

Competitor analysis shows that even market leaders struggle. Samsung’s “in-fold” structure is praised for its slimness but is more difficult to produce than “out-fold” counterparts. Breakthroughs in such areas as multi-neutral plane engineering, sophisticated hinge systems, and stress-managed substrates are being used to mitigate problems like delamination, buckling, and display wear. Nevertheless, even with swift innovation, the search for a truly durable, large-screen foldable continues to elude us.

While Apple puts its foldable iPad initiative on the shelf, the wider industry is still grappling with identical foundational issues: high yields, cost reduction, and reliability over tens of thousands of fold cycles. The convergence of materials science, mechanical engineering, and consumer economics will define the when or whether big foldable tablets arrive in the mainstream. Meanwhile, the spotlight moves to the foldable iPhone, where the stakes for innovation and market adoption are equally deep.
