“Without getting hysterical,” Brookings Institution economist Mark Muro replied, “the unemployment jump for programming really does look at least partly like an early, visible labor market effect of AI.” His are the words that echo in a shocking fact: computer-programming activity in America has hit historic lows since 1980, when Pac-Man was high-tech and the internet a mere spark in someone’s imagination.

The statistics are grim. More than 300,000 computer programmers worked in the U.S. in 1980, and the peak was more than 700,000 during the early 2000s dot-com bubble. That number declined to about half its former size today, as the total employment in the United States has increased by nearly 75% since then. The decline is particularly pronounced in the last year, with a 27.5% drop in the 12-month average of computer-programming employment, coinciding with the rise of AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
ChatGPT, the computer program that is able to execute coding functions without end users possessing high levels of technical know-how, is the face of the danger posed by AI to the conventionally coded career. Klarna is among companies that have openly acknowledged its presence, stating their AI chatbot would be able to substitute the work of 700 full-time employees. Though Klarna’s use was confined to customer service rather than engineering, its impact on coders is not small.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has estimated that AI will soon be capable of doing the coding of mid-level engineers, unleashing more terrors. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna does not agree, however, and provides the estimate that AI will probably only automate 20% to 30% of coding. Krishna believes the programmer can never be worth more than the value of his gold for hard and innovative work, and states, “History has shown that the most productive company gains market share, and then you can produce more products, which lets you get more market share.” And then you sell more products, and you can get more market share.
The divide between computer programmers and software developers only serves to add fuel to the debate. Programmers are not concerned but with coding, whereas developers have other responsibilities like being a middleman between customers and engineers to create customized solutions. As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, software development careers are going to increase by 17% from 2023 to 2033, which is heavily contrary to the predicted 10% decrease in computer programmer careers during the same period.
This divide is reflective of a transition in the skill sets required of the tech world. As code AI becomes better at doing tedious coding work, focus is more and more being directed towards those that require creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sums it up best: “AI won’t replace programmers, but it will become an essential tool in their arsenal. It’s about empowering humans to do more, not do less.”
In fact, AI has implications that are longer in reach than automation. TensorFlow and PyTorch are changing software coding by freeing up developers to work on more complex issues. GitHub Copilot, for example, provides developers with live suggestions of code, thus developers can produce faster without sacrificing quality. These technologies are not taking programmers’ jobs but transforming their ways of working, enabling them to spend more time on planning.
But there is still a question. Evans Data Corporation surveyed respondents and discovered that nearly 30% of software developers are certain that AI will end up replacing them. Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory took it far enough to project that software developers would be replaced by AI by the year 2040, as machine learning and natural language processing technology advance to the point that machines can write huge chunks of themselves.
Despite all of these forecasts, human programmers will still be needed by the majority of experts. Google AI Senior Fellow Jeff Dean says AI is not a breakthrough and lacks problem-solving skills by saying, “AI can be a powerful tool for programmers, assisting them in writing better code and accelerating development cycles. Is AI replacing programmers? No, because it still lacks creativity and problem-solving skills.”
The programmer of the future would be “Software 2.0” from the vision of Andrej Karpathy, Director of AI at Tesla. There, the programmers are busy with searching and scraping large quantities of data in order to train AI software and not hard-code functionality. That is an indicator that the programmer needs to escalate his skill level, practicing lifelong learning and remaining connected to what is trending on AI and machine learning.
Ultimately, the rise of AI presents both challenges and opportunities for the programming profession. As Norman McEntire, an industry veteran, puts it, “By using AI as an assistant, you can accomplish more tasks in a shorter period. Everyone works faster, so we have more time to focus on solving more problems and producing innovative technology. With AI, existing programmers can produce new and improved code faster. And others who perhaps were hesitant to program can now use AI to help with coding.” His optimism reflects a broader sentiment: AI is not a threat but a collaborator, capable of elevating human potential in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
The question remains: how will programmers navigate this transformative era? Will they embrace AI as a partner, or resist its encroachment on traditional roles? As the industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear adaptability and continuous learning will be key to thriving in the age of AI.
