Ever wondered how it would feel to stray on a pink lake like one does in streets or look at mountains painted in rainbow hues? The planet is filled with incredible, unusual destinations that make one raise their curiosity levels and rouse the inner adventurer within. Do not miss these most bizarre yet breathtaking natural wonders across the globe.
Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia : Just imagine walking on the beach at night where the ocean glows. That is Jervis Bay for you. Known for its twinkling bioluminescence, where tiny plankton light up to create a surreal, magic-like effect, this would normally be visible during summer. With some luck, you can witness it any time of the year.
Spotted Lake, Canada : The final one, located in British Columbia, is only a mosaic of different colored spots worthy of any sci-fi movie. Known to the First Nations people as Kliluk, Spotted Lake would appear so colored due to the large amounts of many different minerals it contains, which, upon evaporating during summer, leave behind different deposits. Otherworldly, fascinating.
Danakil Depression, Ethiopia : Billed as ‘the hottest place on earth’, this is an unforgiving land of lava lakes, acidic springs, and multicolored mineral deposits forged by the divergence of three tectonic plates. In summer, temperatures can rise as high as 55 degrees Celsius. So if you’re in for a really extreme landscape, look no farther.
Zhangye Danxia, rainbow mountains of China : This is what a hand-painted watercolor masterpiece must look like from some divine artist. These hues, so vivid and bright, are actually hundreds of millions of years of mineral deposits though. Several observation decks enable jaw-dropping views without harming this landscape of a geological wonder.
Lake Hillier, Australia : This bubblegum-pink lake is on the Middle Island. A shade of pink like this, in its intensity, belongs on another planet. Its pink color comes from the mix of algae, including halobacteria and other microbes that reside here. It’s safe to swim in, but one normally has to get there by scenic flight, which adds to the allure even more.
Giant’s Causeway : Is a guesstimated number of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns in Northern Ireland, having been formed from an ancient volcanic eruption and being considered one of the wonders steeped in folklore. It offers immense views to the North Atlantic Ocean. We were walking through the world of evocative mythology.
Tianzi Mountains, China : These eerily towering peaks seem to be taken straight from dystopian fiction—not to mention that they also helped to inspire the movie “Avatar” due to how it features floating mountains. With view site accessible from Zhangjiajie and providing breathtaking vistas, these mountains are best appreciated from a cable car.
Thor’s Well, USA : This literal sinkhole has “Drainpipe of the Pacific” written all over it and seemingly swallows up the ocean. Formed off the Central Oregon Coast in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, just a few miles south of Yachats, this view should get you stoked but not too close to wade—especially during high tide.
Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia : Is nearly 11,000 km² of flat white salt are just one more Earth special. When it gets covered with water, this forms the world’s largest mirror. This is very surreal and ideally suited to both photographers and travelers.
Pamukkale, Turkey : The “Cotton Castle,” with its steaming thermal waters cascading down the slopes in a series of terraced pools, has been the millennia-long draw that brought visitors here. It has since been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, ensuring its preservation for future generations to goggle over.
Colombia : So, Caño Cristales is better known as the Rainbow River, which can only be a real fairy tale river. Colorfulness is a result of unique flora that bloom in the bed of the river while their color changes depending on light conditions. It flows through the stunning Serranía de la Macarena National Park.
Chocolate Hills, Philippines : A grassy, innocently conical hill that turns brown in color during the dry season can make them appear like a chocolate mound giant. The Chocolate Hills are actually a geological formation, unlike any other anywhere, and should be on the list of every “must-see” visitor to the Philippines Champ Gundam, situated in the Bohol province.
Lunar Rainbow, Victoria Falls, Zambia :These falls refract moonlight through the spray to create a colorful ghostly apparition. It is, therefore, out there only in absolutely perfect conditions usually during a full moon.
Fly Geyser, USA : This marvel of nature was created by accident as a geyser spewing colors across the Nevada desert due to its thermophilic algae. This lies on private property, but the available tours and being elusive make it one of the most interesting destinations available.
Marble Caves, Chile : The Marble Caves of Carrera Lake are nature per se, and the marble formations give way to the impression that they are very intricate with the reflection of the vibrant blue waters, creating a fantastic natural masterpiece. After all, it’s by boat, so half of the fun is getting there.
These spine-chilling and amazing places let only us infer how magicked our Earth is, often much more than what has been realized. So, pack your bags, and take your camera along for the adventure of exploring the most astounding wonders nature has in store for us!
