Mysterious Milky Way Object Baffles Scientists: The Enigmatic MUBLO

It’s said that space has a knack for keeping any of us on our toes. Just when we decide we have most of those bizarre entities swirling around the cosmos pegged, it throws something else at us. Consider the case of the Millimeter Ultra-Broad-Line Object, some kind of really weird microwave-emitting phenomenon toward the center of our galaxy that has many scientists scratching their heads.

Detected with the powerful radio telescope of ALMA in Chile, this mysterious object resides right at the center of the Milky Way in one of the most extreme environments in the galaxy known as the central molecular zone. Known to contain extremely high densities of gas and star-forming regions, these areas of the CMZ get rather chaotic, being packed full with tens of millions of solar masses of gas, a supermassive black hole, and plenty of stellar remnants.

While observing this tumultuous region of sky, scientists picked up something they had never seen before. As it became known as G0.02467–0.0727, the MUBLO ended up compact in source composition, composed of cold dust and gas hurtling at an astounding velocity of nearly 112 000 miles per hour. More interestingly, it was an object convening radiation only in microwave form.

The lead author of the study, published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, Adam Ginsburg and his team went through a long list of possible explanations: protostellar outflow, explosive outflow, collapsing cloud, evolved star, stellar merger, even an intermediate-mass black hole. None of these fit with the characteristics of MUBLO. “We consider several explanations for the [MUBLO],” writes the paper, “including protostellar outflow, explosive outflow, a collapsing cloud, an evolved star, a stellar merger, a high-velocity compact cloud, an intermediate-mass black hole, and a background galaxy. Most of these con­ceptual models are inconsistent with data or do not sufficiently explain them. The MUBLO is, at present, observationally a unique object.”

And finally, thereof lay what has puzzled the scientists. One of the most mysterious factors is the temperature of the gas ringing the object, which was measured at a frigid minus 436 degrees Fahrenheit. That is incredibly cold compared to what is normally expected for that part of the galaxy. The gas molecules surrounding MUBLO are another mystery—they weren’t moving in any simple ring and also couldn’t be explained as being blown off by some sort of stellar explosion. This theory was further problematized by the absence of certain chemicals that almost always follow such an event.

The authors did not stop here. They considered one interesting possibility first: that of MUBLO being a remnant of stellar merger. Though the hypothesis was very appealing, the dust mass associated with MUBLO was significantly larger by more than an order of magnitude than seen in any other merger remnants. The IMBH theory, on the other hand, also did not quite agree, for it could not explain all features of the observed MUBLO by them.

Considering these uncertainties, further studies in millimeter and mid-infrared bands are required to understand the exact nature of this enigmatic object. For the present time, the MUBLO will stay one of the most tantalizing puzzles within our galactic neighborhood.

A discovery like this “The MUBLO “was just a rude reminder that so much remains to be learned about our universe. Every new finding that fits or fits not under the umbrella of knowledge helps us better our grasp on things. That search for answers continues and with it, scientists’ patience to find whatever else is waiting in those stars.

So the next time you look up into the night sky, remember: there are still so many MUBLO-like mysteries yet to be revealed, any of them having the potential to change what is perceived as reality concerning the cosmos.
