Gemini Turns Google Maps Into a Landmark-Savvy AI Copilot

Which is more useful when you’re driving: being told to ‘turn right in 500 feet’ or’turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant? Google is betting on the latter, using its most advanced AI, Gemini. The company’s latest update turns Google Maps from a static navigation tool into a conversational, context-sensitive assistant able to understand complex requests, identify real-world landmarks, and proactively warn about disruptions to traffic.

At the core of this update is natural language processing, set for navigation. Gemini can now handle multi-step, open-ended queries that go far beyond the rigid commands of its predecessor, Google Assistant. A driver might ask, Find a nearby restaurant within the next four miles on my current route that serves affordable vegetarian food, then follow up with, “What’s parking like there?” and finally, “OK, let’s go there.” This conversational continuity is enabled by how Gemini remembers context across queries, synthesising Maps’ geospatial database with reviews, web data, and live traffic conditions. As Google Maps product director Amanda Moore explains, “We’ve often envisioned navigating with Maps as being your all-knowing copilot, giving you exactly the information you need when you need it and taking the stress out of getting from A to B.”

But that’s not all, as integration doesn’t stop with navigation data: Gemini can leverage other Google apps, such as Calendar, to provide frictionless cross-app workflows without the user ever having to leave the Maps interface. For instance, while describing a route, a user might say, “Add a calendar event for soccer practice tomorrow at 5 p.m.,” and Gemini would perform the task in an instant. Interoperability is part of a broader trend in AI integration throughout Google’s ecosystem, where the company’s assistants act more like unified agents than siloed tools.

One of the most obvious changes is in landmark-based navigation. Not fully dependent on distance metrics, Gemini relies on the computer vision capacity to process billions of Street View images and cross-references using 250 million mapped places. The system filters high-visibility structures, stations, restaurants, distinctive buildings-and folds them into audible turn-by-turn instructions. This closes a long-standing usability gap: while drivers often can’t tell how far away something is at high speed, they do respond to visual cues. It’s connecting the dots between trusted information from the web, reviews from the Maps community, and all the rich geospatial data that Maps has. And then Gemini pulls it all together with its summarisation capabilities into one clear, helpful answer you can act on instantly while you’re on the go.

Another big enhancement is Proactive Traffic Alerts. Using real-time traffic monitoring, Gemini tracks usual routes in the background-even when the Maps app isn’t open-and pushes early warnings about accidents, construction, or closures. This draws on predictive analytics of real-time live feeds for rerouting before delays are inevitable. Starting to roll out to Android users in the U.S., it points towards ambient navigation intelligence where an app passively works to optimise travel.

Gemini also powers a new version of Google Lens inside Maps. Tap the camera icon in the search bar and point at a location for it to start a natural-language conversation about what you see. The AI may identify a building, summarise how popular it is, describe what it’s like inside, or even highlight signature menu items at a restaurant. It’s computer vision mixed with semantic search for a deeper sense of surroundings in real time.

Underpinning all these features is a deliberate effort to avoid AI hallucinations. While generative models can fabricate plausible-sounding but false information, Google says Gemini’s navigation responses are “grounded” in verified datasets actual place listings, live traffic data, and Street View imagery. Moore emphasised, “When you ask for places on your route, it’s using the actual place information in the real world. So there should be no hallucinations on places to stop at or things like that.”

The rollout is gradual, targeting Android and iOS first, followed by Android Auto and vehicles running Google built-in. Landmark-based navigation is U.S.-only for now, while Lens with Gemini hits later this month. For more than two billion users worldwide, these changes herald a future in which navigation won’t be about passively following a map but rather interacting with an AI copilot that sees, understands, and responds like a human guide.
