Samsung’s Galaxy Z Wide Fold Takes Aim at Apple’s First Foldable iPhone

Could the next major smartphone battle be fought on a 4:3 screen? Samsung is also working on yet another foldable smartphone, dubbed the Galaxy Z Wide Fold. Interestingly, both Samsung and Apple’s foldable smartphone models will have a primary screen measuring approximately 7.6 inches, accompanied by an external screen measuring around 5.4 inches. Apparently, both phones will incorporate the use of the 4:3 aspect ratio, which is quite unusual when considering the current trend of foldable smartphones that sport vertically-stretched screens. With the planned technology, handling web content, document work, or even viewing images is easier and more natural.

The Wide Fold will not be an alternative offering to the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Z Fold 8 from Samsung but will instead be offered alongside the new product. Sources quote that the second half of 2026 will see the release of the Wide Fold, possibly before the release of the iPhone Fold from Apple. The release pattern is not new from this company, which had previously released similar products like the S25 Edge before the release of the iPhone Air.

In terms of its innards, the Wide Fold series can be anticipated to come equipped with premium-level hardware like its predecessor, the Z Fold 8, which may include the use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, 12GB of memory, among others. However, one of the most interesting technological advancements for the Wide Fold series, which has never been seen on any of its foldable lines before, may be its use of 25W wireless charging capability, the first of its kind that may be first seen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Wireless charging, which may soon go beyond 15W-20W, may offer considerable improvements when it comes to the time it takes for the batteries to charge.

The hinge mechanism will be an important engineering point of interest. The hinges on foldables are made of finely machined multi-links to achieve a good strength against damage while keeping a minimal appearance of the fold lines. Samsung’s recent models have already survived durability tests of over 200,000 cycles without breakage in viral endurance tests on social media platforms. Apple, on the other hand, is believed to be working on a “creaseless” screen solution – an achievement that would involve major breakthroughs on thin layering of glass and polymers to spread stress on the fold line evenly. If successful, it would set a new standard in foldable durability and aesthetics.

Display technology is another area where competition will abound. Samsung’s versions of foldable phones use leading-edge display screens that are foldable and feature high refresh rates and deep color gamuts, although Apple is rumored to require even more refined pixel alignment and touch sensitivity. Even with a 4:3 format ratio, both manufacturers need to work on scaling their user interface and take a clue from their tablets’ interface designs.

What seems to be Apple’s plan is that when a user unfolds iPhone Fold, it will turn to Landscape mode so that iPad applications can run right away since there will be seamless integration for their customers. The market dynamics make this rivalry even more pressing. The market share of Samsung in the US market catapulted to 31% in Q2 2025, recording 23% market share previously, while Apple’s market share dropped to 49% compared to 56% previously, as per Canalys. Experts state that this rise in market share of Samsung has partly been due to Samsung’s overall pricing strategy, with phones ranging from $650 to $2,400, as it covers different consumer levels.

Apple’s arrival in the world of foldables, with an expected market penetration of 22% in overall unit shipments and 34% in overall value, is expected to increase overall prices to triple that of regular smartphones. “The success of the Galaxy Z Wide Fold will depend on more than simply competing on Apple’s sizes.” Rather, its success will depend on its engineering of the fold in the device, reducing the visibility of the fold, its management of thermal issues in high-speed wireless charging, and its software polish in accommodating the wider aspect ratio display. As fans of all things tech are aware of the ever-escalating battle between Apple and Samsung, it appears that at last, foldable phones are poised to break into the mainstream in the year 2026, as both giants come at each other on near-identical displays.”
